"Here is some of the best new jazz around, both in conception and writing and its performance is exquisite. It really is brilliant". Cardiff Jazz Society

“Stapleton’s writing mostly revolves around propulsive piano vamps with nods to Gil/Miles circa Sketches of Spain”. Jazzwise

"His compositional building blocks, repeated ostinati, short motifs that shift through registers and keys, and choppy phrasing alternated with smoother melodic or freely improvised sections, remain the basis of his technique, but the structures are tighter and his playing more deftly controlled than on his earlier recordings". Piano Magazine (Alyn Shipton)

DSQ @ Cheltenham - Observer Review | May 2006

Check out 'The Observer' review below of DSQ and Julian Seigel at Cheltenham Jazz:

Stuart Nicholson, Sunday May 7, 2006, The Observer

Julian Siegel Trio / Dave Stapleton Quintet - Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Maybe it's because we're an island joined to the United States by a common language and separated from Europe by the Channel that we haven't worked out which way to face. This cultural ambivalence was played out in two absorbing concerts at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival's Rising Stars series. Main attraction was saxophonist Julian Siegel's Trio, which contained two pinch hitters from New York, drummer Joey Baron and bassist Greg Cohen. Siegel is an accomplished young musician, but his angular, asymmetrical compositions prompted improvisations that tended to follow the example of many current young American musicians by displaying technique at the expense of content. It was what Cohen and Baron delivered in spades. Though dazzling, they were curiously unfulfilling. In contrast, Dave Stapleton's quintet performed tunes from their current CD, When Life Was in Black and White. Allowing his European classical background to shine through in compositions of arresting melodic continuity, his band - Jonny Bruce on trumpet, Marcin Wright on saxophones, Paula Gardiner on bass and Elliot Bennett on drums - succeeded not so much through individual voices but by the strength of their collective musical personality.

DSQ - Jazzwise Album Review | October 2005

Following hot on the heels of the excellent Conway Suite, Stapleton’s improvised duo with Deri Roberts, this quintet release deserves a wide audience. Stapleton is a highly talented composer and pianist and these nine originals are full of powerful riffs, melodic hooks and intriguing and surprising turns of phrase. With a remarkable young band from the Welsh scene, it’s truly heartening to hear music this vital and fresh. Paula Gardiner is an unusually imaginative and forthright bass player. With Jonny Bruce’s jabbing trumpet and Elliot Bennett a brave and subtle keeper of complex time, this group is a real find. However, in a way, saxist Marcin Wright seems the most interesting of the bunch. On tenor in particular, there’s a rich sense of history to his approach. He’s obviously listened far wider then the usual ‘Trane, Shorter and Brecker checklist, with hints of Shepp and Golson but also of Mobley and Turrentine. But he’s no young fogey and what he does is genuinely creative and new – fire matched with real melodic purpose. There’s a sense that by the closing Lazy Blinker, with its guest slots, that it’s all been said. This is very much a band album and better left at that. For me this is up there with the Barkers, Sheppards and Baptistes of the UK scene. Duncan Heining (November issue)
